Before the visit
Choose a venue and read its first-visit information. Confirm whether you need an introductory class, what it costs, and whether equipment rental is included. Allow time for the venue’s paperwork and orientation. Booking a day pass is not the same as booking an instructor.
Tell the venue if you are attending with a child, a large group, or a specific access need. Describing the situation early gives staff a chance to explain the right option. You do not need to make your first visit sound more experienced than it is.
At the front desk
Say that this is your first climbing session. Ask where to put belongings, how the space is organized, and which orientation applies to your plan. Follow the gym’s instruction for equipment and falling. If an explanation is unclear, ask again before using the area.
For ropes, the gym should clarify which skills and assessments are required. Watching another climber or having used a rope years ago does not establish that you meet the current venue’s requirements.
During the session
Choose approachable climbing and take real breaks. Share the wall and stay clear of active landing areas. You can enjoy a session without reaching the top of every climb. If a movement or situation feels wrong, stop and get help from staff rather than letting a friend rush you.
Notice what you enjoy: puzzling out a move, working with a partner, or simply being away from a screen. That is useful information for deciding whether to return.
Before buying more
After one session, you have better questions for the next. Compare the full cost of admission, equipment, instruction, and travel. You can rent again while deciding whether climbing fits your week. A membership should support a routine you want, not create pressure to use a purchase.
Questions, answered.
Do I need to buy shoes first?
Usually you can ask about rental shoes for a first visit. Confirm availability and sizing with the gym.
How long should I stay?
There is no required duration. Allow time for check-in and instruction, then choose a session length that feels manageable.
